About density units
Density is mass per unit volume. Fresh water is the useful reference point: about 1,000 kg/m³, 1.0 g/cm³, 62.4 lb/ft³ or 8.34 lb per US gallon. Because g/cm³ and g/mL are the same size, laboratory results often quote either interchangeably.
Density is mass divided by volume. Converting its units does not change the substance, temperature or pressure; converting a mass to a volume separately requires a density appropriate to those conditions.
