About absorbed dose units
Absorbed dose is the radiation energy deposited per kilogram of material, measured in grays. The older unit, the rad, is exactly 0.01 Gy. Absorbed dose says nothing about biological harm on its own — that is what equivalent dose, measured in sieverts, is for.
Absorbed dose is deposited energy per mass: 1 Gy = 1 J/kg and 1 rad = 0.01 Gy. Converting to sieverts requires radiation weighting information, rather than a universal unit factor.
