About digital storage units

Digital storage has two parallel systems. Decimal units follow SI: a kilobyte is 1,000 bytes. Binary units follow IEC 80000-13: a kibibyte is 1,024 bytes. Drive manufacturers use decimal units and most operating systems display binary ones, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as roughly 931 GiB.

Lowercase b means bit; uppercase B means byte (8 bits). Decimal kB, MB and GB use powers of 1000; binary KiB, MiB and GiB use powers of 1024. Choose the label that matches the source measurement.
