Fuel Economy Converter

Convert mpg, L/100 km and km/L.

From

An inverse measure: 5 L/100 km is twice as efficient as 10 L/100 km, not half.

To

US mpg figures are about 17% lower than imperial mpg for the same car, because the US gallon is smaller.

Result

1 liter per 100 kilometers equals 235.215 miles per US gallon

About fuel economy units

Fuel economy is measured two opposite ways. Distance per volume — miles per gallon, kilometres per litre — goes up as a car gets more efficient. Volume per distance — litres per 100 km — goes down. Because they are reciprocals, converting between them is not a simple multiplication, and the difference between US and imperial gallons adds a second trap.

Distance per fuel (mpg or km/L) increases with economy; fuel per distance (L/100 km) decreases. Converting between these forms is reciprocal, requires a positive value and depends on whether a gallon is US or Imperial.

Compare unit values in the base unit. Numbers are rounded to 8 significant digits; conventions and assumptions appear beside the units.
